Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a world of wonder and exploration.
You could go into a coffee shop and make eye contact with people. You could start a conversation with a stranger without it being weird, or dangerous.
Aside from during election season, nobody talked about politics.
"I don't talk about politics" was such a common thing to hear that we didn't always know how our friends voted.
Then the internet happened, and the good vibes started fizzing through the dialup. Still awesome. Still not really sharing our politics. Still fun. Still human.
Then something changed.
We don't need to filter through all the pieces to the puzzle of that change, which would involve a deep dive into everything from politics to conspiracies to algorithms.
We just need to agree on one point.
That's it. Just one.
And I'll make you a deal.
If you can't agree with me on this one point, you are FORBIDDEN from reading further, but if you agree with it you MUST read to the end.
Deal? OK. Deal.
Here's the point: Life offline was better in the 90s, and life online was better before 2016. Don't care what generation you are, if we can't agree on that one point our time together is done and I wish you a good day! I said GOOD DAY!
NOW THAT ONLY THE TRULY SPECTACULAR PEOPLE ARE HERE, I NEED TO TELL YOU A SECRET
You're smart. That isn't the secret. That's just obvious by the fact that you're still reading. So I know that you will understand what I'm about to tell you. Most wouldn't, but you will.
Nobody grows up. Not one person. Adults are just kids pretending they know what they're talking about. They're just winging it.
If you sometimes feel as if you're completely unqualified to handle the boredom of adulthood, you are not alone.
Fortunately, it is possible to learn to be a responsible and educated person who passes for a grown up without falling asleep from boredom at every lesson.
But before I get to that, let me continue my story. It was a dark and stormy knight. The knight was crossing a bridge when he heard a rustle. It was a troll.
He could tell it was a troll, because at that exact moment his phone beeped, and he saw that the troll had passed judgment on both his boots and horse on social media.
The troll leapt from the swamp beneath the bridge, startling the horse who bolted into the wilderness.
The knight managed to remain on board, but it was a bumpy ride.
The trolls were trying to take over Freedomshire any way they could.
Clockerfly Nation would be next.
The folks of Clockerfly Nation were kindhearted and warm. The knight was particularly fond of Clockerfly Coffee Shop. There were a few strange fellows in there, including the occasional friendly pirate. Strictly speaking they were reformed pirates. Steampunk robot pirates, to be precise.
The chief among them was Clockerfly Guy. Always sharing tales of a mythical and miraculous place called Trove Island.
On the island was buried treasure, and when you found it the treasure was something you already had inside you, but you hadn't yet discovered its true value.
TROVE ISLAND IS NEARLY READY FOR VISITORS
A merry band of swashbuckling steampunk robot pirates decided to change their ways. With the help of a wise woman and her First Mate, along with a variety of other feral animals, they have almost made the island ready for its first ship full of indiepreneurial adventurers.
TO SAVE CLOCKERFLY NATION FROM THE TROLLS THESE BRAVE ADVENTURERS WILL SEEK OUT TREASURE, TAME DISORDERED BEES, AND HEAL THE TROLLS BY BECOMING HEROIC IN THEIR OWN LIVES.
WE BELIEVE IN IMPERFECT ACTION. WE BELIEVE IN BEING YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF. WE BELIEVE IN FREAKS, GEEKS, AND UNIQUES. WE BELIEVE THAT IT ISN'T TOO LATE TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM TROLL CULTURE. WE BELIEVE YOU CAN HELP US DO IT. WE BELIEVE IN YOU.
